1988 245 Timing belt broke while siting in trafic. 200

I was sitting in traffic on my way home from work, just as happy as can be, being that I just got all of the suspension parts that I had ordered for my wagon. What do you know 2 traffic lights from home the car dies, after all the looking and reading around I figured out that the timing belt has broken. I don’t know if the valves are damaged or not and I’m a little unclear if the B230F is a interference engine or not.

With that said I decided to change the timing belt and see if I could get the car started. I have had no luck in getting the car started. The engine is getting fuel, spark, and I have set the timing base of the FAQ from the 700/900 series and this tread:

I took the time to count the 44 teeth on the timing be to line up the I gear.

Thanks for the help.

Did you remove the distributor wires when you replaced the t belt? Any chance they got mixed up on the re-install?

I've only done two t-belts on the Volvo engine, but both times, I did a mechanical/visual timing check before putting everyting back together. Dowel or pencil in the #1 cylinder, rotor pointing to #1 position, both #1 valves should closed. Rotate the engine by hand, watch the dowel and the valves. The dowel should be at its highest point when the rotor points to #1. As you move the rotor 90 degrees past the #4 cylinder position, the dowel should pass through its lowest point, and the exhaust valve on #1 should start to open.

Instead of doing the tooth counting thing, check this out:

This is where I started when I couldn’t get the car started the first time. I will go back over it again to check and make sure I didn’t miss anything.

Thanks for your time.

You waited one day too long on that belt. It is non interference. Triple check the timing it is real easy to be off a tooth or two.
