Start Inhibitor-Back-up Light Switch: Starting problems 200

My son has a 1987 Volvo 245 GL. Recently, when the ignition key is turned to start to car nothing happens except the lights on the dashboard go on. It has a new ignition switch and the battery is fine. I recently discovered that if I shake the auto shift lever while turning the key, the car immediately starts. I presume that it must be the start-inhibitor switch although I am not sure. Has anyone else had this issue? Does it require an adjustment or does it need a new switch?

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks,

Only Volvo

Hi there,

You may find it loose, or be able to clean it up. Neutral start switch

Hard to say without seeing it, but a new one is about 30 bucks, and takes about ten minutes to install.
