Fan belt broke on B234. Got hot. 700

Hey All,

Out in the '90 740 GLE with the B234, going to a party, trying to find a street address, and notice all the dash lights on and the temp gauge was in the red. Its my Ma's car, she was driving. Upon noticing, we immediately stopped the car and I opened the hood to see what was going on. Found the fan wasn't spinning, so neither was the water pump. Car had plenty of coolant, but it was venting out of the cap. I phoned a friend who was kind enough to pick us up. The car cooled down while we went to the auto parts store to fetch a new belt and some more coolant. (since some vented out of the cap) I got a new fan belt on and topped up the coolant bottle. It didn't need much coolant. It started up and seems to run fine. Not sure if any harm was done. I will keep a close eye on the oil and coolant levels. Moral of the story: Replace older belts before they fail. I sure feel stupid.

Regards, Jon 'Uncle Olaf'

D'oh. Sorry to hear that. Hopefully all's well.

My moral from a somewhat similar story: don't buy cheapo belts - buy the dayco top cogs with a slotted back instead of slotted contact surface. I replaced all my belts after >4 years and within two summers, the Alternator belt destroyed itself.
The original dayco belts I took off still looked fine when I changed them.

    Happy Bricking,

      Thanks 700

      Hey Will,

Thanks for sharing your experience. The car seems to be running fine so far. I'm keeping really close tabs on the coolant and oil levels. I totally agree with you about using quality belts. Its funny you mention the Dayco Top Cogs as the pair that drive the power steering and A/C are those. I replaced those around the holidays last year. Should have done the fan belt too. Oh well.

      Regards, Jon
