Project 244 +T + M47 200 1992

Some of you may have seen this car over on another forum but though I would share it with you guys as well.

First a little background on the car and how it feel into my lap.

A 1992 240 with some bruises and scrapes from being driven in Baltimore city. Original owner bought a car from my friend and she gave him this car when she bought the 93 240 he had. She stated that the car needed an ENGINE! Well my friend asked me if I wanted the car since he did not pay anything for it I told him SURE I can not turn down a FREE car. So he towed it to me with a title and said have fun.

He asked what are you going to do with it I just and said you will see. It has been sitting @ my shop for about a month until I could find time to work on it. After some FEW mintues I knew right away what was wrong with it INTAKE gasket on #1 runner was blown out. I installed a new intake gasket and she runs okay again.

Future plans A Fun Low BUDGET project

Some pictures for now. Yeah I know it is missing the grille I was hitting the brakes real hard and the grille flew out and I ran it over

More pics here Let me know what you guys think

An M47 can't handle that much power. Better plan on either swapping the trans or keeping the boost down (or more specifically power, if you do lots of supporting mods you won't need as much boost) or you'll end up with a box full of gravel:

It's usually 3rd gear that lets go. It's not bad shifting, it's just too much torque for those little gears to handle. 3rd gear is in the middle of the case, farthest from the bearings at the ends, easiest to bend up away from the layshaft/

Fortunately enough, if you do that the Mustang T5 trans swap is pretty well blazed by now.

I am well aware of the claims about the M47 box and I have made changes to correct this. This engine in this car is basically stock anyway . These trans hold up behind the (STOCK) 700 Turbo cars as well.
I also have access to a redblock M90 box if all else fails.

Turbo 700's actually got the M46 trans all the way to 1992. You have an M90 stateside? :-)

Nice, M90's are pretty strong. Have to work on the shifter to make it fit a 240 though.

That's my picture, it was a fine condition M47. Somewhere around the 225 hp level, it let go. Clean shift into third, step on the gas, as the revs went past 3500 rpm it made a giant metallic ripping sound and the motor freewheeled.

The other gears kept working, it made it several miles back home.

So in my case, it's not hearsay. FWIW.

I will be trying this for my trans and see what happens.

Over fill to the upper undrilled boss. This upper boss is the filling boss for the M45/46. Not sure why Volvo lowered the oil level. Also ATF can mist during operation and that will lower the fluid level even more. That's another reason for running engine oil. So I think many M47's are under lubed and fail. Additionally you should remove the 1st gear vibration damper. You'll have to tear down the box, but they all fail on the M47 according to Lars Andersson who taught the gearbox rebuilding classes for VCNA. I hope this helps.

The under-lubed issue was on the early 'first gen' M47's, which had the 5th gear installed in some diffreent lcoation (not clear on the specifics), but not properly lubed when filled to the normal height. So 5th gear could prematurely wear. Not an issue on later M47 as far as I know, and not a culprit in the 3rd gear weakness either.

Wow! Really nice work! It must be so nice to have a shop like that. In one week I am beginning 3 months of auto body painting class which I am taking to learn how to prep and paint my brick myself. This was really inspiring. Do you have a final pic of it on the ground with rims, tires, and paint? Are those e-code headlights that you put in?

Thanks again for sharing your project.

Thanks I have a small shop that I do side work and an occasional project from. Good Luck with your class. The MOST important part of a GREAT paint job is the prep work that is done before paint !! The car is not doen as of yet with side work a full time job as a Technician and other cars I own needing attention as well. Yes theya re ECodes with Hi N Lo HID's.
