If they're 15" then they're from a 740 or maybe from a 940. Not originally off a 240.
240s with steel wheels + hubcaps were 14" through the span you mentioned.
All through the '80's right through '93. So far as I know the earlier 240s also used 14" when they had steelies.
740's and 940's used 15" when they had steelies. The 740 hub caps were the same basic design as the 240, with the row of approximately rectangular cutouts around the perimeter. They look nearly identical, just an inch bigger.
The 15" 740/940 wheels fit the 240s just fine. What's good about that is, there are plenty 15" and even 16" alloy wheels available from junker 740/940s. The studs on the 740/940s are metric though, so don't swap the lug nuts back and forth, they won't fit the 240.
An earlier 240 wheel cover design that I think was from the mid-'80's had a large removable center portion, about 5" diameter. You really have to pay attention when putting those back on. The fronts go on a bit different from the rears, though the center cap is the same. I think it's the rears that are especially tricky.
