Can this happen? 740turbo 700 1989

The alternator belt wears out and becomes loose. This causes the car to die suddenly while driving.

Figured it out... bad coil wire. Water got into the plug on the distributor end and corroded it. The worn alternator belt had little to do with it but I replaced it anyway.

To truly "see" what is happening why not a cheap Multimeter and check the voltage at the battery while running. Normally it will be about 13.5 or so. If it is under 13V with accessories off something is wrong.

Certainly, but it wouldn't happen suddenly. The battery would have been draining while doing duty for the alternator and eventually your car would stop running.

You mentioned the loose belt. If that was the cause, and not a bad alternator, you should be able to tighten the belt, jump start it and be good.

Good web site. Even I could understand it!

The car seems to be running good now that I've tightened the belt. I'll do some more testing on the alternator anyway though.

The alternators in our bricks have carbon brushes - which wear out. They're built into the voltage regulator, which can be bought for about $40-$60, or you can replace the brushes yourself with a soldering iron for about $5.

I would bet that it was just the belt, but it's only two phillips screws to check the regulator.

        Good Luck,
        Will
