M46 Overdrive Solenoid ? 200 1984

Trying to get my son's od working again, it became intermittant. I changed the relay, have good click at solenoid, changed fluid (2X now), cleaned little filter screen, tried to get the solenoid off to see if it rattles, but couldn't get it to budge...what size and what wrench do I need. Should I buy a new solenoid? Thanks guys!

The rear portion of the solenoid is not loose and able to be wiggled by hand is it?

I had one like that that displayed symptoms just like yours, but the rear portion was loose fitting. Luckily I was able to test mine with a replacement from a parts car.

I used a flat spanner designed to adjust the headset on a bicycle. I used my die grinder with an abrasive wheel to cut it out to the correct size.

If you've got a good, healthy click at the solenoid, the odds are good that it is not your problem. To answer your question about removal, I've got a 1" (One inch) thin wall, open end angle wrench that does the job nicely.

If the solenoid clicks with the application of the shifter switch, and you have changed the fluid along with cleaning the filter...

Time to replace the actuating piston O-rings.

Thanks to all responders...Duane, should I try to replace the solenoid before I get into trying to remove the access caps (with a special spanner), replacing the pressure release valves, springs, etc.? Can a transmission shop do this J-type work as routine? Should I just put another (salvaged) od in?

The task to get your OD working again involves removing it from the transmission. The actuating piston O-rings are only accessable with the OD off the tranny. Another solenoid would only cost you money that you do not need to spend.

You could go with another OD... but once you have the OD off the tranny to change in the new one, the replacing the piston O-rings would only take another 15 minutes to the task of swapping out the OD. And two O-rings and a gasket minimum are a lot less than a used OD which may or may not work as a bolt up wihtout some work before hand.

Your OD works and has reverse, if it makes no noise, refurbbishing the one you have is best economically.

Finding a tranny shop that will work only on the OD? Few and far between and they had better be familiar with the Laycock OD's. Ask if they refurbish Laycock Overdrives over the phone. That alone will save you a lot of driving. I hope your fingers are up to punching a lot of buttons.

A better system that would yeild faster results is finding a Volvo specialist that has worked on the Laycocks or find a Triump or MG mechanic willing to do the task. Laycock is British and was used on a lot of the British autos in the late 60's up to when they all went broke in the mid 70's.

I'm obviously not Duane, but I'll bet a good Euro tranny shop already has that pin wrench for dropping the three caps out, and maybe even has the o-rings in stock or knows where to get them easily. For an hour and a half (best guess) of their labor, you could be back on the road and smiling, rather than grunting around with a replacement OD of perhaps questionable merit on your garage floor. Just my $.02.

Yes, I would think so also, I'll make some calls, again, thanks for the response!
