1995 940 temperature gauge not working

Our 1995 940 volvo sedan has a temperature gauge that is not working. We think it could be the engine coolant temperature sensor that is causing the problem. How do you unplug the connector to test it? How do we remove and replace the sensor it this is indeed the problem. Also what other things should we be looking for to get this gauge working again?

Just to rule out a sticky gauge, have you tried tapping on the dash near the guage?

I recently was misled when I put a resitor in place of the sensor and the guage worked fine. I ordered the sensor and then figured the guage would stick only on certain occasions.

A single wire to the Temp Sensor under the intake manifold. With the Key in the On position, if you breifly short that wire to the Engine block ( ground) the gauge should start to move to HOT. If it doesn't move at all... The problem is not the sensor but something between the wire and the gauge.

We want to be able to take the temp sensor apart without having to break it or cut wires to test it. Is there a way to do this and if so how?

The connector that goes to the Sender is a basic Spade lug... just unplug it from the sender and touch it to the engine block to see if the Temp gauge reads a warming up engine. No cutting or mangling of the sender.

If the gauge on the dash moves, then a good chance the sender is bad.

You can clip a meter on the sender ( where the wire attaches) and the other lead of the meter to the block of the engine, start the car and see if the resistance changes as the Engine heats up. That's all this sender is, A thermal resistor.

The ECT supplies temperature information to the ECU (engine) and EZK (ignition). It is under intake manifold parts 3 and 4.

The temperature gauge sending unit is under intake manifold ports 1 and 2.

Your problem is likely to be bad solder joints on the back of the instrument cluster. You might check them and re-solder as you think is necessary.

On a '93, is it in the block or the head? there is a one wire sensor in the upper block and something else just above it in the head. I don't want to confuse it with knock sensors.

The sensor in the block is the knock sensor. The coolant temperature is measured from sensors in the head.
