IAC on a '90 240: normally open or normally closed? 200

Hi all,

One of the few nagging issues with my '90 240 has been a low idle. TPS is new, throttle body is clean.

In inspecting the Idle Air Control motor, I see that the opening is normally open (i.e. without voltage), but it's only open about 1/8", or about 20-25% of the opening. When voltage is applied, it snaps shut. The edge of the moving part is a little dinged up, as if a previous owner had pried on it.

Is the size the opening adjustable? I see that there's some sort of protected adjustment on the motor body.

A new IAC is very pricey, but I could probably find a used one.

IAC on a '90 240: normally open or normally closed? 200

When the IAC is NOT powered, there should be a slot open as you describe. This is so the car stands a chance at idling if the ICU has failed or the connector is unplugged. If you put 12V across the IAC, it should snap wide open, that being said, the first thing it does is CLOSE that small opening and rotates to open fully on the other side of the shutter!

Try flipping the polarity of the 12V and see if it pops wide open, if not then your IAC is sticking. You can use a wooden dowel or a wooden chopstick in order to rotate the shutter without causing damage. If it does not move freely, then try a thorough cleaning of the IAC.

IAC on a '90 240: normally open or normally closed? 200

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but how exactly do you go about "applying 12 volts"? Directly from the battery, or... ? And which contacts to touch the wires to to see if it's opening and closing properly? But mine is an '83 240 if that makes any difference.

      thanks

I would like to add that I'm not a fan for WD40 either.

I like using silicone spray after cleaning. The dry type by 3M is best but the other type of cheaper stuff won't hurt.

The idea to me is not to have oil vapor from the engine get in there. It catches more of the back flow of oil soot vapors after shut down and restart.

Using motor didn't make sense to me. It most likely will not make it to the bearing. It is deep behind inside the shuttle and housing.

Only really thin stuff could flow into it and wash dirt out. That's why brake cleaner works well.

That's my recommendation for less than the two cents it cost me too!

        Phil

      Jorrell wins! 200

      Jorrell,

      Thanks so much!

I hadn't realized that the shutter rotated THROUGH the closed position to an open position on the other side.

Whoever had been wanking around in there with a screwdriver (?) had boogered up the leading edge of the shutter, causing it to catch and preventing it from going to open. 10 secs. with a Dremel and all is well.

Now that all is loose and free, hit it with brake cleaner to knock out the carbon and follow up with a coating of clean engine oil... DO NOT use WD-40! WD-40 has a habit of hardening over time and gooping things up.

        Glad the info helped!

My understanding, which might not be correct but I think I read it some time back. When the IAC works it adjusts the amount of air it needs at idle by opening the little door to the opening it needs to allow the desired air through. I guess that would be controlled by the ECU. Not sure when it closes other than I guess when the throttle is opened, that way the metered air all goes straight to the manifold through the throttle body.
