Wing mirrors - re-colouring 200 1992

The grey-looking black(?) wing mirrors on my white wagon look sadly worn from the sun and has lots of fine wispy lines from wind blown sand/dirt.

Before I actually start re-colouring the mirror housing, can anyone tell me if it is the plastic itself that's black or is the colour painted in?

It will determine whether I'll use a plastic dye or a spray-on paint with built-in plastic primer.

Thanks.

Lucast

I hit all of the plastic (and the "decal" trim under the windows) with Forever Black. Works a treat... but takes several "coats". Get a lawn chair and a 6-pack, then work your way around the car a few times. Still looks great 3 years later.

      Thanks for the information Ryan.

I forget that I do have a bottle of unopened Forever Black lying around. Might just use it for the wing mirrors. I'll be respraying the bumper in any case to match the lovely looking one in front.

Spirit dye for leather works GREAT on the black trim on our cars (and mirrors), and you can buy it by the quart. In fact, judging by the consistency, physical characteristics, smell, etc. I'd say it is exactly the same thing as "Forever Black" trim dye which is quite a bit more expensive.

Dye, then condition with some kind of trim dressing, or my personal favorite for almost everything: Johnson's paste wax.

The colorant is in the plastic, so, dye.

I used dark gray dye on the lower door trim molding and it looks great, so I'd imagine that black dye would work as well on the (formerly) black bits. But in the past I have had excellent results from using plastic/vinyl-safe spray paints, so your mileage may vary.

Also, clean the plastic with IPA (99% isopropanol) or some other non-oily cleaner before dyeing/painting.
