Wipers go on with headlights 700

I have a classic 1987 760 turbo wagon. Last night I turned on the headlights and on came the wipers both front and back. I checked the symptoms BOXVOLVO posted on 8/15 and they are identical. However, no headlight wiper connector and the wiring seems solid. Anyway, I'm stuck on this one... Here are the symptoms: (1) headlights on, wipers go on; (2) pass side headlight and parking light are dim; (3) if I "flash" the headlights when the lights are off, wipers go on; (4)with the headlights off, the right turn sig blinks rapidly; (5) right turn rear light doesn't work at all; (6) the "driving" lights and the rear "fog" tail lights don't work; (7) the rear tail and stop lights work ok; (8)the left turn indicator works, but - when the headlights are on the right turn indicator on the dash stays on steady then gets brighter when I turn on the bright lights; (9) when the parking lights only are on, wipers are off BUT when I turn on the right turn indicator, the wipers go on... I've checked all the lamps. I love my 760 and have treated it like a baby since new. I'd sure appreciate any help on this... oldfolkhom@aol.com

Ok, I think I've fixed it. Cleaned the contacts on the driver side fender ground point. Cleaned all headlight contacts. Solved issues 2 through 9; issue (1)was still a problem. Then I discovered my drivers side high beam lamp was burned out. Replaced the lamp, issue (1) was gone. Talk about why or how? I still can't figure the reasoning on this one. Thanks for all the input.

Yeah, I can understand how a faulty ground can cause lighting failures, but I'm still puzzling over the wiper thing. When my daughter's car was doing that, I pulled the covers off the steering assembly, and inspected all the wiring to the wiper and combo switches, and it all looked factory new.

I'm still working on the 'moved the wires around, solved the problem' theory, that the stock wiring harness had the wires for the headlight wipers, and that a short to positive occured inside the harness. Just a guess, but when I moved the wires around, the problem went away.

Funny you should mention the highbeam bulb out. My daughter's car had both out - but the wiper issue went away before I replaced them.

This will be tough to diagnose without a good wiring diagram (get the Volvo OEM diagram book ($30) which is superb). But don't forget your grounds: corrosion in the ground planes can cause all kinds of unwanted electrical issues. see the FAQ for details on how to clean them.

I like the suggestion to remove fuses 17-20 and see what happens when you try the running lights and directionals. You might put em back one by one to identify the specific leg causing the fault.
Then it's back to the schematic.

The rear right brake light can be the bulb out sensor-
Is the bulb out idiot light burnt out?

It's likely that your bulb out sensor is in need of soldering to fix the brake light.

You may have more than a single electrical fault

Yeah, this one is kind of crazy, and as I mentioned in my posts, the headlight wiper theory was my best guess.

Try this - with the key on, headlights on, wiper switch off (and wipers going, of course) pull the fuses for the headlights, one at a time, first the left, then the right. Which ever removal causes the wipers to stop, check the wiring on that side.

The only other place where I can see the wires getting close enough to cause this problem is in the fuse and relay tray area.

Another suspect area is the combo switch/stalk on the steering column - the wiper control is on the other side.

I have a pdf chart for the 89 740 - the wiring should be similar - if you need it, let me know and I'll e-mail it to you.

Sounds like a short to positive. Something in the steering wheel. The headlights are wired through it. On mine the wipers are to. Something got wore out in there.
