Shaky, vibrating, clunking, popping, generally sucking! 120-130

Howdy all.
The other day I drove my 122 about 60 mile round trip (nothing new) and all was well, drove like a dream. The only hic up was that when I first took off from a stop. there was a sort of grinding/pop/clunk from the rear. but once going, all was good.
Then the next day, there was a noticable vibration above 30-35 mph.
The next day, more vibration,
till this morn.
This morning, there was a ton of vibration, to the point of sounding like something big and metal was hitting the body. The clunking when I take off was major.
The weird thing is that it only did it while accelerating. When I coasted, all was good in the world, I really couldn't drive over 30 mph, and acceleration was slow ( I had to drive it to get home from work.

I looked under the car today to check the u-joints, they seemed good, all else looked good also. the only thing that didn't look right was the support that holds the axle by the middle u-joint. The grommets are completely worn and gone, the drive shaft will freely move up and down. and ite support seems about 2 inches away from the plate that the grommets are in.
two questions:
1) does that seem like the likely culprit?

2) How do i fix this?

Thanks in advance, you guys are always awesome.

Thanks
Kent

Isn't there supposed to be a spring that runs from the support bearing housing to the the undercarriage too?

You should pull that driveshaft out and inspect it thoroughly; take it someplace that specializes in driveline work for u-joint replacement. Check the center support bearing assembly too. Hopefully the pins that go into the rubber bushings haven't been damaged (worn thinner in diameter) from knocking around.

Don't be surprised if you need some new driveshaft bolts; special undersized 7/16 head, available from the dealer. Don't forget to buy new fine thread 7/16 locknuts too.

The new rubber bushings will go in more easily if you lube them with vegetable oil. The newer manufacture ones are a fairly pliable rubber compound; the older style rubber ones are kind of hard and a pain to get in.

Besides the obvious, you have a bad U-Joint too.

Hello,

You need a pair of new driveshaft support bushings which are easily available.

But do not be surprised if you have at lease one bad ujoint.

To replace the 2 driveshaft bushings, you will have to remove all of the bolts for the driveshaft.

You do not have to remove the driveshaft to replace the support bushings, but you should pull the driveshaft all the way out and check to see if you have a seized ujoint.
