Bad Ignition Switch? 900 1996

Hey Guys,

Lately I have been having issues with my instrument lighting. It will randomly stop working, and the only way I can seem to fix it is to turn off the ignition switch, sometimes that does not work either. I don't use the headlights much, as the car is driven during the day for the most part. However, I noticed tonight, after they died 3 times in 2 miles!, that the ignition switch and key were fairly hot to the touch, when I removed it after shutdown. I'm going to drive to work tomorrow without the lights to see if the switch stays cool, maybe I can isolate the electrical portion of the switch that way? Does anyone have some instructions as to how the column comes apart? I'm concerned about messing with the gearshift interlock cable, air bag, and being able to get the key tumbler out the right way. Any help or suggestions would be awesome!

    Bad Ignition Switch? 900 1996

    Dear Dave,

May this find you well. I've never had to pull and ignition switch. Before doing any electrical work - especially involving or near any airbag component - be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable clamp from the negative battery terminal. Put the cable clamp into a plastic bag, to isolate it. Wait 20 minutes: that allows any capacitors to discharge.

An airbag deployment at close quarters can be lethal. Even if not lethal, it will cost several thousand dollars, because all items will deploy and have to be replaced (two air bags, two pyrotechnic seat belt pre-tensioners, the airbag module, and the wiring that connects these items).

You will need your radio's security code, to restore radio service. If you do not have the code, most Volvo dealers can give you the code, if you give them the vehicle's VIN (if the radio is the factory-installed item).

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

      Bad Ignition Switch? 900 1996

I had a bad ignition switch on my 1997 960, all sorts of intermitent electrical problems. When starting the car the shifter was locked, no power windows, no radio, no seat belt chime or warning indicator, and no turn signals. Turnde out to be the ignition switch.

It is a pretty easy fix. You need to remove the upper and lower covers. There is an allen screw holding the tilt handle in place. Loosen the screw and slide the handle off. Then remove the covers. Unplug the ignition switch and remove the 2 screws holding the switch to the lock assembly. Just make sure everything stays together, you don't want to try and reassemble the jack or switch assy. Like the previous poster make sure you have the radio codes.

      Good Luck
