85 vs 92 240 Master brake Cylinder 200

Hi All, Is there any difference between the 2 master cylinder's other then the reservoir? Can I use the 85 reservoir on the 92 M.C.? I know it fits because I tried it. Thanks,Charlie

    The ABS equipped cars use a different master cylinder than the non-ABS 240s. I would absolutely not mess around with using the wrong one.

    '92 = ABS, '85 = no-ABS

    Good question. I believe that the front Calipers were changed over those years but I suspect if the size of the Caliper Piston is the same then the proportion of braking should be the same. Is the Plunger length the same on both Masters?

      Thanks for the reply,I still have the one on my car so I would have to pull it apart to measure the plunger length. I didn't want to pull it because It's my daily driver.My problem is my brakes stop O.K. but I don't stop very good if I stomp on the brakes if I have to but the pedal seems hard at that point.I replaced the Brake Booster,bled the brakes and still have that problem.The brake booster holds vacuum after shut down because the next morning I pulled the hose to the booster and still had vacuum. I thought maybe the master is leaking internally.Could the Pressure Differential Warning Valve have anything to do with the problem because I have never got any Warning Light so I thought it to be O.K.,also cleaned the 2 pressure regulating valves on the axle but no change.So with all that I'm looking at the M.C.because i'm running out of idea's.

        Hi Art, Are you saying that it won't work? Charlie

          Hi Charlie,

          Sorry, I was reading Tony's discussion about master cylinder sizing, and I see your original question was about the reservoir.

          Sure the rez fits. And you'll lose the safety warning light if you put the square box on instead of the triangular one. I don't know about internal baffling - the little wall between primary and secondary. I imagine it will "work," but I would not go so far as to advise using it -- naturally -- this is your braking system we're talking about.

          While trying to figure out why they get more bucks for the ABS master, and wondering if the hydraulics were the same inside, I ran into this interesting tutorial:

          www.autoshop101.com/forms/brake02.pdf

          Best of luck, but I would advise scouting the yards for the real thing with the switch in it.

            Thanks Art,The tutorial for ABS/NON ABS M.C.was interesting but even after reading about the two I still think that the ABS would work on the NON ABS because even if the internals are different they are still doing the same job but I don't have the balls to try it.I wonder if someone else has.I'm buying a new M.C.right now.Thanks everyone for there input.Charlie
