91 240 sputtered then died now won't start

The car started fine ran a few blocks then acted like it wasn't getting any gas. i had to floor it just to get it to the side of the road. i sat on the sied of the road giving it gas when it back fired revved like normal so i took off to get it back home when it just died. it sounds like there isn't any spark when i crank it now. the motor just spins. It has spark at the coil. any ideas on what to check?

    Pull the plugs and see if they are sparking. Don't crank too long or you will blow too much fuel out of the spark plug holes and, well, lets just say I almost burnt down a barn that way.
