Rear differential fluid 140-160

Changing the rear differential fluid in my 68 144. What weight/spec oil is recommended? Scanned owners and Haynes manual and 90 weight was listed. Any reason to go synthetic?

If the diff is good - Straight 90, If it's noisy - 85W140

Synthetic might save fuel, but I wouldn't risk putting it in a 30+ year old diff because it's sure to find leaks for you.

Yes switching to synthetic oil on a car with old marginal hard seals can increase leakage. Based on experience.

        Synthetic DIFF oil - it's thinner. 140-160

How many 35 year old diffs have you switched to synthetic?

There's not a big advantage in using synthetic oil in old diffs especially since a straight 90 oil lasts indefinitely.

What oil did you use? Is it leaking out of the axles or the pinion? Pinion leak usually means that the pinion bearings have lost their preload. Rarely does the pinion seal fail for no reason.

I use Mobil 1. Its moist around the pinion housing. No dripping onto the floor, so I decided to live with it.

a '68 144 is good for about 300k miles if really well maintained....

The Dana 30 rear is good for about 500k miles if poorly maintained behind a low power B18 or B20...

Go with whatever.. it's the least of your concerns...
