Conversion of rear Fogs. 200

My 1985 245 GL has the rear fog lamp system. With the headlamps on, and fog selected both rear upper lamps illuminate. I'm sure that somewhere someone has converted them to illuminate as an extra set of brake lights. Any problems with this, or is it as straight forward as it appears?

I'm about to do this coversion myself. My question: is the brake light switch designed to handle the extra 3.5 amps for the rear fogs?

I did this on my '89... I'm guessing the wiring is very close.
You can do this fairly simply by just adding 1 diode and with out any cutting of wires. BUT if you do it this way, the Foglight switch will light up when you step on the Brakes. The better way to do it is to add two diodes. the One would run from the Blue/red wire from the brake switch to the white wire of the Foglights. The second diode would be between the white foglight wire and the fog light switch so you have to cut this wire. this diode keeps the voltage from getting into the foglight switch when you step on the brakes.

I did this under the dash , right next to the Bulb out sensor.

Can you read electric schematics? I have a sketch if you are interested.
I used a dual diode that we had here where I work. You can buy what you need at a local electronics store ( Radio Shack)

Got it today. It looks great, and great job isolating the heat sink. I'll get it installed this weekend, and will post my results. Thanks a million.

Yes, Tony, I can read electrical schematics, and I'd appraciate seeing one for this.

I think Tony may have done this on the later (post 85) 240. The simple conversion would add a couple diodes between brake and fog lamps, but just like with simple trailer lighting converters, that stresses the bulb-out sensor, wiring, fuses, and brake light switch, where a relay with separate power feed would not.

Sounds like you just may be getting annoyed at the new breed of tailgaters armed with multi-airbags, anti-lock braking, and electronic stability control. (We used to call them Volvo drivers :-)

The way I add the diode before the Bulb failure Sensor, there should be no more strain on the BFS itself. yes, a bigger 'hit' on the Brake switch.

Adding the Diodes at that 'Hard wiring' mini PCB adapter at the Tailights, yeah, the Bulb Failure sees the extra Current.

Yes, that's a better idea. Why don't you send me that schematic and I'll add it to your pages: Tony's Pages

You forgot that down here in God's waiting room (Florida) they are busy chatting with the other old hags on the way to play Mah-Jong, or talking on their cell phones, or just busy taking a nap. I've heard too many approaching tire screeches of late.
