I have been troubleshooting a Speedometer problem with my '92 740 GLE; the odometer is working, but the speedo is dead- no ABS light when driving either. I have found the insulation cracked at the sensor end, and repaired that- i think that's what got the odo working, but still no speedo reading.

Any ideas before i give up and take it for repair?

    There are several speedometer repair shops around the U.S. Send them the complete panel and about $150. Turnaround is about a week and generally carries a one-year warranty.Search "speedometer repair"on the web.

    I have the same problem with a 92 745 that I recently purchased. But in my case it's a sporatic speedo and a totally dead odo.

      Same problem here: leaking capacitor juice had shorted out the IC pins. Some DeOxIt and a small electronics foam brush solved the problem. I bought the caps from Digikey and will install them next winter.

        Steve,

        Last night and this morning I've had a functioning (and accurate per GPS comparison) speedo but still no odo. Do you know if the broken odo could be an electronic issue, or, since the speedo is working, would the broken odo have to be a mechanical (like nylon gear?) malfunction?

        I'm just trying to plan ahead so that I'll know what to expect when I dig in.

          Chris, I'm not sure, but with the minor looking I did, looks like the odo is also an electronic function- no cable, etc.

          I think I will be taking in to a Volvo place for repair- i have already wasted too much time for little result.

      I started to do the repair for the capacitors. But there are a few screws that I couldn't get out. I had to put the thing back together. Put it back in the dash. I use the tachometer as speedometer. There is no telling how many miles my 740 has. It hasn't worked in the 7 years I have owned it. It stopped working at 176,000.
