Problem and questions about 240 stalls while driving 200 1992

I just purchased a 1992 240 from a dealer that may have been sitting a few months. I had driven it a few days without problems on the open road and in town.

Then the car, while driving, stalled twice within 10 minutes of each other. After running some errands, the first stall happened when I was going about 40 MPH. I managed to pull off a side road and the car started right up again. I just thought this might be a fluke. The second stall happened about 10 minutes later after I stopped into a business for about 5 minutes. When I started the car, and after about three minutes, the car stalled again going about 15 MPH, and I pulled off the side of the road. Again, the car started right back up.

The car starts and idles smoothly. I have tried just idling the car several different times by letting it run a few minutes and turning off, and then restart. I would do this over several times. I did this to see if it would stall like it did while driving. It ran smoothly idling and never stalled.

Does anyone have any ideas to the cause? Any easy things to look for first? Thanks, John

Problem and questions about 240 stalls while driving 200 1992

A couple of thoughts. On the'92 I believe the Main fuel pumps are fed by fuse #6. Make sure that fuse and holder area is clean. The pumps draw a lot of current and if the connection is dirty there may be a resistance buildup. cutting off the pumps.... fuse cools down in a short time and then the car starts again.

On the Fender, Behind the Drivers side headlight, The Ignition Control, it heatsinks to the Fender, if the screws are loose or if the Thermal compound is not between the device and the fender, it may be overheating and shutting down.. Make sure the mechanical connection to the Fender is good.

The Fuel Pump relay: This relay gets Cold Solder joints from Vibration. perhaps it too gets hot and the Electrical connection 'breaks', a few seconds later it cools enough to start the car again.

Do a SEARCH on for "Air Box Thermostat" I don't think this would cause a shut down as much as crappy running but you may want to educate yourself on the Thermostat before you have a problem.

Problem and questions about 240 stalls while driving 200 1992

Thanks, Tony. I'll check the fuses...and try to look at the ignition connection. When I was test driving the car, the windshield wiper didn't work, and the dealer cleaned the fuse connections and it was fine. I also had problems with the electric windows, where I sprayed some electrical lubricant down between the switches and it helped a lot. That is why I am thinking some bad connection somewhere, or maybe the car just needs driven and blowing out.

Unfortunately, what I understand about a Volvo stalling, it can be in multiple places to look for and to resolve. I am trying to do all I can before I give it to a mechanic who is a lot more knowledgeable than I am. It could be an expensive venture tracking down something that happens intermittently. I am not sure when you pay someone to look for a problem, rather than knowing what the problem is, and resolving. How do you look when to pay for what? I have gone through situations where mechanics start throwing parts at a car, rather than having a pretty good idea what the real solution is. In one instance while getting my other Volvo worked on, I found the problem myself, after the mechanic replaced several expensive parts that didn't work. Thanks, John

I see you are brand new to the site. WELCOME!

Wait a while. Let the guys here walk you through some stuff.
If 'we' describe something and you don't know what we are talking about... ASK! Sometimes 'we' may write in terms you don't yet know.. let us know, 'we' will spell it out a little clearer. no sweat.

My cars have never been to a mechanic.
I'm that guy on the Block that gets Lawn mowers, leaf blowers, snowblowers, chainsaws dropped at his doorstep with a note. "Tony, It wont run, good luck"
I thank my dad for being good with my hands. He was the same.

If you are willing to get your hands dirty on this car, you will start to understand it very quickly. These 200's are old enough now where someone on this website has already fought the fight you are working on.
Do a Search for 'Crank positioning Sensor'. It's a $40 part that you might want to change out and take that variable out of the equation. Read some of the posts on that sensor. Maybe you can see if yours has teh Yellow painted band on yours to see if it's original.
