Vapor pressure in gas tank? 700 1987

Hi folks,

This is one of those times when I simply do not know how a perfectly running Volvo 740 is supposed to behave. I just got through with a test drive after replacing a fuel line and repairing some leaks in the rubber boots on the hard plastic lines.

Good news is that I no longer smell gas from the rear wheel well, nor when I take the in-trunk access panel off. Everything appears tight and dry. One thing I have noticed is that I don't get a 'pssst' when I open the gas cap. Other cars I have used always had a little vapor pressure behind the gas cap after running.

I assumed the lack of pressure behind the cap was because the pressure was vented by the leaks. Now, I am wondering if I got all the leaks. Is there a mechanism in the Volvo system that prevents vapor buildup?

Thanks!

Ari

Some cars have to have an certain amount of fuel in them before the evap system actuates. Sometimes mine makes a sound, sometimes it doesn't. It is only a vapor return. On newer cars, if the evap system malfunctions in any way. A code will set. Check engine light will come on.
