Help - I mutilated 3 cam seals already! 200

I did the timing belt and seals in another 240 3 years ago so I'm not a total novice, but I am having a heck of a time with this cam seal.

I scraped out the old seal which was nearly petrified and leaking oil all over the water pump. Lubed interior of seal, and camshaft, tried to insert it and it wont go more than half way in.

Pulled it back out, scraped more debris out including the spring from old seal, and tried again. Pressed it in with thumbs, pounded with large socket. It still hangs out more than 1/8 of an inch or so. Read Bentley, brickboard, I don't get it.

Removed valve cover - problem solved. 200

Thanks to the responses I was able to make major progress today.

I removed the valve cover, unbolted the seal carrier and could immediately see what the problem was - the metal ring from the old gasket was still there. Cleaned it up and put in new gasket without a problem.

Wow... great to have lots of responses. I'll give it a shot tonight - take the valve cover off, clean out any remaining debris and give it another try. Thanks!

I am all for removing the cam cover and the front bearing cap so you can see what is happening in there.

Hopefully you haven't scored the cam where the seal is going to ride. You will be able to see that once the cap is off. Polish it up nicely before installing the new seal.

    Bret,

It sounds to me like you have not removed the old seal. You don't really scrape old seals out, you pull them out. I think you may have pulled the seal material and spring out of the old seal, but the metal ring that contains the seal material is still in there. Clean it up and take a good look. You may have driven the old seal in deeper by trying to install the new one.

    Charley

Now that you mention it the old seal was so deteriorated and I don't recall getting the metal ring out (Bad eyes and oil seals don't mix well). Will try to clean it out tonight... let you know how it goes.

I would get a Valve cover gasket. Remove Valve cover. You do not need to remove camshaft, just the Camshaft Cap/carrier in front which holds the seal.
You'll see what I mean once you get the cover off. Then you can see whole end of the cam and CLEAN it really well. And can EASILY just slide her on. I suspect you have additional pieces of old seal in there.

    2 things come to mind.

presuming it is the right seal and why would it not be you still have foreign matter in the orifice which needs removing.

this trick i learned here and it works for me everytime. lube the seal well inside perimter and outside , stick it back into its plastic bag and place it in the FREEZER overnight.

then install the seal as soon as you remove it from the freezer.

if i were you i'd just buy a valve cover gasket and take the camshaft off to change the seal.

you can do a valve adjustment at the same time.

      Hello,

There are at least 2 different thickness seals and I have had to remove 2 of the very thin seals from this area.
