Loss of Power 200 1990

The engine will start and run fine at different speeds for awhile. Then one cylinder will stop firing, then another, and then the engine dies. Restarting usually occurs after waiting a minute or two. It may restart and run ok for a while. Another time, the engine then ran roughly and lacked enough power to move the car. When this occurred, it was towed to the dealership. Other times it runs as though it is functioning properly as it did over the last seven days when the technicians tried to replicate the problem after it was towed to the dealership Drove home with it, about 55 miles. Stopped the engine to get something at WalMart and the engine would not restart. None of the cylinders fired. Walked home. Suggestions? The Volvo repair shop is quite a distance from home.

    Howdy,

If I understand the problem, you have a poor/no run condition, intermittent, getting progressively worse. Is that correct? Are there other symptoms to report? Tachometer does what? Indicator lights?

On the work order from the shop, there should be a list of items tested. Please post that information.

Meanwhile, an intermittent problem may be unsound wiring. Start right at the crankshaft position sensor and follow the wires into the harness. You are looking for breaks, corrosion, burned insulation, etc. Look at all the connectors under the hood very closely. Open each connector, inspect the pins, and slide the connector together several times to allow the females to burnish the males and vise versa. Inspect the grounds too.

Let us know what you find.

      Mr. Shannon De Wolfe,

Thanks for the suggestions on the Loss of Power question. Unfortunately, the dealership did not do anything with the Volvo except burn through a tank of gas waiting for the problem to replicate. Since it didn't, the technicians took no action. So, I cannot provide any information off of the shop ticket. I'll start looking through the wiring and connections for breaks and corrosion.

      David
