1992 964 AC clutch not engaging 900

Just returned from a guy who has previously charged my AC unit in my other 960 and he has indicated that he can't charge this one because the AC Clutch is not engaging. Although he thinks he can ultimately figure this out, he believes it may take an hour or so to diagnose why the clutch is not engaging. I thought it may be better for me to have some clues for him to work with as he is not familiar with this car at all.

Any ideas or directions for me to take would be greatly appreciated.

Also am having an issue with air not circulating to the dash vents. It appears that a door is not opening or closing and as a result the air is nominal to the dash vents. I'm under the impression that these vents are activated by the vacuum system but do not know where to start looking to see if this is the issue.

Again, any thoughts or previous experience with this would be apreciated.

Can you be more specific about what is meant by "AC clutch is not engaging?" I'm wondering if it makes a click, indicating that the magnetic coil as activated, but the clutch surfaces are not coming into sufficient contact to grab. I've seen this happen when the clutch has been installed incorrectly, as the tolerances are small. A missing washer in the assembly can throw the whole thing off.

I suspect the problem may be more simple, though. If the A/C system is low on R134a, then the clutch will be prevented from engaging by the low pressure cutout switch. If that's all it is, then injecting some R134a into the system should raise the internal static pressure enough to override the low pressure cutout switch and let the clutch engage.

Regarding the second question about the dash vents: if the air does not circulate to the dash vent only when the car is pulling a high vacuum (e.g., under acceleration), then check out the recent post from bcg for vent air goes to floor when accel--bad a/c check valve. It has some links to the faq describing this symptom and diagnoses for possible causes.

Thanks much, good info but PSI reading was 40+ and jumped the low pressure switch with no activation to the clutch.

Any other thoughts about a possible relay that may be bad or is it time to look at the clutch in more detail

      Thanks in advance.

Are you jumping the clutch right at the compressor? The wire goes thru the high pressure and high temp sensors on the compressor.
