A/C Not working 200 1985

1985 240DL- air conditioning not working. Hot as heck here in Albuquerque! Fuse #12 blows immediately when turning on switch. About a week ago a/c belt broke and I had a new one installed (was this an omen?)

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Start under the hood with the Green Wire 200 1985

    Hello,

The place to look is under the hood and at the green wire. It is the wire that goes through the low pressure switch and over to the clutch on the compressor.

That famous Volvo crap insulation is a very common problem until 1988, and Inga's (86 245DL) wiring was falling off the wire several places. There was quite a large section with bare tarnished copper showing. Places where the wire can move around from vibration and any place the wiring makes a turn seem to be the worst. Did blow the fuse a couple of times before I found the problem.

Took some 22 gauge green wire and replaced the green wire where it came out of the wiring bundle. That is located way down at the bottom of the rail on the driver’s side of the engine. You may need to remove the large air intake hose to reach the wire. Ran a new wire from there over to the low pressure switch, left the connector out crimped a blue butt splice onto the wire, I will tell why the connector was left out in just a sec. Then ran the wire out the front and over to the low pressure switch located on top of the dryer. The another green wire from the other side of the switch goes to the compressor clutch. Reused that connector and put shrink tubing over the splice and up to the connector.

The connector that was left out is so the low pressure switch can be bypassed while you are filling the AC system with coolant. You can do the same thing with a little jumper over on the wires connected to the low pressure switch.

Good Luck and hope this gets your cool back on, the forecast says it’s going to be 99 here today. They are forecasting a cool down for later in the week, only going to be 96.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Paul
