Air Box Thermostat??? Where does this go? 200

1989 240...

After doing a little sleuthing I figured out my car needed an Air Mass Meter. When i went online to buy the part, the website said I needed an Air Box Thermostat. I know where the AMM goes, but not where the Air Box Thermostat. I can't find it in my Haynes Repair Manuel. Could it be under a different name? Is the Air Box thermostat the same thing as the regular thermostat? Any help would be great. Just need to know where it goes, hopefully I can figure out the rest.

Thanks-

Sam

The hot air ducted to the air inlet box is of dubious value. If you are subject to under-hood emission inspections in your state, then leave the hose from the exhaust manifold to the air inlet box intact. Otherwise, remove the hose and also unbolt the "stove" assembly from the exhaust manifold and you'll have a quieter car that also looks cleaner under the hood.

Remove the air inlet box completely and study its contents. You'll see where the inlet thermostat actuates the flapper to direct heated air or ambient air to the inlet. You can wire the flapper to block the heated air (most stealthy approach), or simply remove the flapper and inlet air will be drawn from behind the LH headlight and from under the hood.

By now you must know that the air box thermostat failure mode results in drawing hot air into the AMM, which can cause premature failure. So you need to either remove the air box thermostat or take other measures to prevent a steady diet of hot air to the AMM.

So the open default position, when I open up the air box and take it out, is for the flapper to be closing off the hot air hose inlet from the manifold. is this correct? That is what I am seeing. I need to wire the flapper in this position permanently? So air will only be coming from behind the headlight? I dont understand that if I was to take the flapper off, the hot air will be coming from the manifold. Can you please explain? Thanks for your help.

If you take the flapper off you should plug the hot air intake. What I did was to take the lid off a tuna can and used it to cover the hole with a little epoxy.

The air box thermostat is located in the air filter box. On our bricks, it is recommended to block the hot air intake permanently to ensure the long life of the AMM. There have been countless posts on this board on how to accomplish the permanent fix.

In other words it goes on ebay or the shelf. The problem with putting it in the car is the same problem your trying to solve at the moment. It fails. I put an aftermarket one in and it failed within a couple years. Every spring or every oil change when you check the air filter you have to check to see if its keeping the hot air hose inlet closed, you know that long silver tube that stretches across the front of the engine to the exhaust manifold. When it fails it fails to keep the hot air out and pretty much cooks your AMM.

I found that a bolt off a donor car, one of the 13mm medium size bolts with a nut can be put in there and adjusted to close the inlet to the hot air hose. Can't remember where on the car I got them but I usually keep all extra bolts and nuts when taking off used replacement parts. Good luck

I unsnapped the assembly out of the box while still on the car.

I then removed the brass thermostat gadget. Stuck in a 5/8 inch square block of any heat resistant material in its place. Plastic, wood, or metal.

The spring pressure hold it there.

It holds the flap over and keeps it shut.

        End of issue.

        Phil
