AC Fan Relay Help 200 1993

It appears that the AC fan relay has failed on the 93. The fans runs all of the time, even when the ignition is off. Last night the only way to turn off the fan and prevent it from draining the battery was to unplug it. I checked the previous posts for the location of the relay. On 91's and 92's it is supposed to be by the coil. On 93's it is somewhere else. Does anyone know where? Does anyone have the NAPA part #?

Also I have heard that there was an article in Rolling a while back outlining a mod to allow the fan to be controlled by either high engine temp or high refridgerant temp. Is that posted anywhere?

AC Fan Relay Help 200 1993

I'm not familiar with the 240 AC, but the 940 does have Fan relay control based on either coolant temp or refrigerent pressure.

Try unplugging the temp sensor in the right side radiator tank and see if that stops the fan. It's a simple circuit ground for the fan relay, and might be your problem.

If that doesn't work, then it could be an AC pressostat (two on the 940, bottom front of condenser) or the the relay itself.

AC Fan Relay Help 200 1993

My understanding is that the 240 system only operates on refrigerant pressure. The interconnection with the engine cooling system was an advancement found on the 940's that Volvo never retrofitted into the 240 as it was at the end of its production run. That was the subject of the Rolling article which outlined the modification of the 240 system to have the 940's capabilities.

I'll check the grounding of the relay as soon as I can find the thing.

Thanks

The fan relay is located on left hand side of the engine compartment. The plug is 4 prong,2 gray wires and 2 red wires. The relay gets it's ground through the pressure sensor located on the right side close to the alternator,in the high side line.It has two wires coming from it,gray wire to the fan relay, black wire to ground.

The relay looks like this, probably clipped to the left or right fender rail and tucked up out of sight.

Hello,

Did you actually look at your radiator?
