Accessory fan diagnosis question for A/C 200 1993

The auxillary accessory fan on the front of the 240 works, in that, when it is unplugged and 12V directly from the battery is put to it, the fan runs. Pressure in the system is fine. Air that is blowing is cold (as a 240 can).

My question is: here in the Memphis heat, I get out of the car in a 98 degree day after driving around town (heat index WAY above 100 degrees) and the accessory fan on the front is not kicking on. How could I find out why it is not? Is there a relay or a way to test the relay to this fan? Any help appreciated.

thanks

Accessory fan diagnosis question for A/C 200 1993

Don't know if this helps, but I'm pretty sure the aux fan on my '90 240 is controlled by a 951 ECU, via the thermal switch in the Nissens triple core radiator. A stock radiator with a Volvo OEM thermal switch would do the same thing. Even after I've shut the car off, if it's hot enough, the aux fan continues running for several minutes.

I'm no expert, but if your ECU is the standard 561, I'm pretty sure it will not control the aux fan the way the 951 does. IS THIS CORRECT?

Accessory fan diagnosis question for A/C 200 1993

Bob, The auxillary fan USED to come on, but for a while now it does not, no matter how hot it gets. My A/C is suffering because of it in idling traffic. I know the fan is okay, but it is not kicking on and I would like to know what/how to test to get it to work. I'm not sure if the relay/switch is in the radiator?

I guess I am fishing for is: what turns on the auxillary fan?

Accessory fan diagnosis question for A/C 200 1993

        Greetings,

1993 240 aux. fan is controlled by a pressure switch in the hi pressure line between the condensor and the evaporator I believe. Look by the lower radiator hose and you should find it.

Not like the older models with temp switch on radiator.

        Hope this helps,rcs
