940 sunroof gasket 900

My 1995 940 sedan's moon roof had a thin black gasket drop out and can't figure out which edge it goes on.

It's just under three feet long, about a half inch wide, grooved eighth inch high.

My choices are the deflector, front edge of the glass, somewhere in the frame or the headliner door. Nothing seems like a perfect fit. It is completely intact, no breaks.

Unfortunately my 1994 has no hole in the roof, so I can't compare this time.

    Tip the sunroof panel up at the back. Slide the headliner panel all the way back. Right where the headliner panel slides under the tray there is a metal strip along the front edge of the tray with a lip on top. The cross profile of the rubber strip is "h" shaped. The groove of the "h" sits over this metal lip with the tall part of the "h" toward the front of the car. You may want to tack the ends down with a little glue (like RTV or silicone sealant) if it won't stay seated.

    When I was cleaning out my sunroof the other week I noticed I'd dislodged the ends of that strip so I immediately knew what you were talking about.

      Well darn, the same thing happened to me when I changed the gasket. I could not for the life of me figure out where the strip goes. Thanks, Dave. To the FAQ.

        My new 92 745 has the sunroof seal coming loose from the aft edge of the sunroof. It appears that the felt part is seperating from the "U" channel part that clips onto the sunroof. It looks like it wasn't meant to be a seperate piece. I'm guessing a need a new seal. I need some idiot-proof instructions on the replacement.

          Yes, on two cars. See the FAQ: remove the sunroof panel (four screws on the sides), pull the old seal, pre-bend the new one to match the old one, install with the gap in the same spot. Use silicone to ensure it grips tightly and seals the gap where it meets. Reinstall panel and adjust so the rear is about 1/16 inch higher than the roof and the front about 1/16 lower. Total time about 90 minutes. It's also a good time to ensure the sunroof panel headliner is correctly adhering to the panel.
