Mysterious Rattle at 2000 rpm…AW70 200

Once again I have to ask your help with my newly acquired ’82 245 GL 150k with AW70. I finally got it out running wonderfully and started to use the brick for my daily commute. I notice that there is a rattle coming from AT (…area?) every time when the rpm is at 2000k. The noise is something like as if there is a loose sheet metal hanging by a screw rattling against a metal surface or body. It is very audible even from outside. It is very curious to me because it make this noise only when it is turning at 2000rpm not otherwise. Do any of you have any idea what this could be? Could this be something to do with the AT? Or the motor? Or something else completely random? The OD is converted bypassed, and it shift great otherwise. The motor runs just like the way supposed to be also. Scratching my head….HELP!

I'm with rstarkie on this one. If you feel comfortable with the front and rear of the car supported on four jackstands, have an assistant run the car up to 2000 rpm. Take a long wooden stick and press around on your shrouds for the exhaust. I'll bet you'll find your problem fairly quickly. A quick trip to the muffler shop to either reweld or remove should get you squared away.

There are various places on the exhaust side of the engine and following the exhaust back that metal is used as a heat shield.

You will find them with air space behind it for the purpose of cooling. These heat shields sometimes vibrate at a particular RPM.

You will have to find a way to access the underside of the car and look for the various heat shields. Sometimes all you have to do is bend them a little to stop the vibration. If one of a shield's bracket is broken it would be suspect for the source of the annoying rattle.
