flimsy steering wheel cover 900 1994

I just acquired a 1994 944T, 207K on the clock.

The top of the steering wheel, around 12 o'clock +/- 2" either side has loose cover so you can roll it forward and back. Maybe it sat in the hot sun for too long.

This is a factory steering wheel with no aftermarket wrap or anything like that.

Is there a way to solidify this patch? I'm thinking like using a syringe to inject something under the cover to bond it or firm it up. Thoughts?

This occurs because the driver unconsciously rolls their hands back and forth while driving. The underlying bond fails and the cover loosens. I fixed mine with Gorilla Glue: drill a couple of small holes in the underside of the cover down to the metal wheel, then use a veterinary syringe to inject Gorilla Glue in small quantities into the gap between the cover and the wheel. Squeeze to push it around. It will expand to fill the gap, so you will need to squeeze the cover down if you overfilled it and push the excess out the holes. Let dry, cut off the dried drips with a razor.

Dear Volvo945,

May this find you well. I think little harm will be done by trying to put an adhesive under the loose section of rubber. However, I doubt it will work. The rubber likely has deteriorated, so will not bond well. Most adhesives are too viscous to flow well. You might have to slit the rubber on the side of the steering wheel closest to the windshield. You may then be able to push adhesive under the "loose sections".

The best solution is simply to replace the steering wheel. If you do so, be sure to get and to read the manual covering the SRS system. This is the system of airbags and pyrotechnic seatbelt pre-tensioners. An airbag deployment at close quarters can be lethal. Even if it is not lethal, it will be very costly. Airbag system components are about $1,000 each, at the dealer.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Down here (in the sun) I think out of seven cars only the 1968 Mustang doesn't have this problem and it's a solid plastic wheel, always been garaged.

I just get the black (hard to) slip on wheel covers for under $10 and I'm done with it.
