Is the best OEM Volvo or is there an aftermarket that's as good or better? Who do you all recommend as to where to get them from? Thanks, Charles

...run away, and run away fast!
(ask me how I know)
Good luck with your Gen. Volv mounts!

Don't buy the aftermarket ones. I put a set on my 740 and after 6 months, they were clunking when the steering was near lock. Absolute garbage.

Genuine Volvo, and only genuine Volvo for this part. Anything else doesn't cut it.
I bought a pair from Tasca... and am just waiting for an opportune time to put them on.

I, too, would stay away from the Scan-Tech stuff for this application. You are so deep into your vehicle at this point, saving $45.00 on this might prove to be a false economy.

The concensus is that the mounts purchased at the dealer are the best. The next best are what are sold as OEM made by SKF. However, my impression of the SKF mounts was not that good. They come in an SKF box but the bearing in the mount is a GMB brand. Rubber quality is suspect also. Whatever you do, stay away from Scan-Tech. Several reports of rubber cracking after less than a year.

OE (not oem) Volvo mounts are $71.40 at TASCA VOLVO. Part #1272455.
My understanding of oeM is that the M means a Manufacturer who makes (or once made) the part in question.
Who makes the "OE" (aka dealer) version today is not generally known. But so far Volvo does not accept crap from its suppliers, which takes the gamble out of buying "OE" parts.

i have heard good results with SKF from some users of this board...order from FCP Groton. I am planning to get a set soon myself. My mounts have cracking on the rubber but they are the originals on my 92 245 and they are still quite solid.

I put after market middle priced from FCP Groton and they where crap after a year. I was just looking at them 10 minutes ago and found the cracks have really widened the past year. I'm looking to take some originals off a donor. I'm hoping this mechanic is near the point of wanting to send the car away so maybe he'll let me take everything I can take in a day for $100. (new water pump, passenger seat, M47 trans, fuel injectors, strut mounts, alternator, ect.... or what I haven't taken so far. He wants $100 for the trans alone but I don't need a M47, just want to save it from scrap.)

just out of curiosity...were they the SKF brand? about 50 bucks a piece or so?

SKF makes bearings (good bearings, actually!), not rubber.... and the rubber is what it's all about here, since rubber is what holds the bearing (and the front suspension, basically) to the car. When the rubber cracks, life sucks all over again... and with aftermarket parts in this case, life will suck a lot sooner than you want.
When I was making this same decision, it came down to this: $50 for not-good (SKF, last a couple years at most) and $71 for the best (genuine Volvo, last 20 years). The $20 difference per side was a no brainer for me.
Just go with official Volvo parts here, or else you get to do this job twice, and for twice as much money. Plus, the Volvo parts will come in a blue box, which always cheers me up a little. :-)

Summed it up very well. One additional point. SKF does make very good bearings. I make sure I get them when I replace wheel bearings. But when I got the SKF strut mounts and saw the quality of the rubber and the fact that the bearings were GMB and not SKF, it was a no-brainer. I actually found a couple of salvage Genuine Volvo mounts that looked to have plenty of life left in them. Good rubber and nice smooth bearings.
BTW, I believe the Genuine Volvo mounts are made by Boge. Same supplier for many of the suspension bushings.

Little bit of Trivia: Volvo cars was basically an "outgrowth" of the SKF bearing company in the 1920's. :-) SKF is definitely top notch stuff.
Unlike other genuine Volvo parts, I can't find any manufacturer identity on the new Volvo strut mounts I have. They're packaged in a rust preventative bag produced by a Spanish company. No markings on the bearings, rubber, or metal of the mount itself. Though there is a "Made in Sweden" sticker on the metal... but this could mean anything. I do think the mounts are simply "Volvo". I would love to be corrected, though!

Okay, it seems that we can all agree that the OE Volvo strut mounts are among the best available so I ordered a set for Tasca yesterday. Thanks to all for having my back. Charles
