Instrument cluster and sidelights always on 200 1992

My instrument cluster and sidelights are always on even after turning off the ignition and removing the key and turning the light switch to off. I suspect it is a stuck relay, but which one?
Thanks for any suggestions.

    Howdy,

Pull fuse 16. Did the lights go out? Just looking at the schematic, it looks like the headlight relay contacts may be welded together.

The instrument cluster and sidemarker lights are not controlled by a relay. I would suspect your headlight switch itself has failed (shorted) internally. Check your switch with a multimeter set to ohms to see if the auxiliary lights side of the switch has continuity even in the off position. This is easiest to do if the switch is removed from the dash first. Consult the wiring diagram from a Haynes or Bentley manual for a pin-out diagram for the headlight switch to see which terminals to use during the testing.

I pulled the headlight switch out and disconnected it - the sidelights and instrument cluster stayed on. However, I have since found that the problem is intermittent and so I am still inclined towards the relay possibility.

Last night when I posted, I was tired and mis-read your message and thought that you had an '82 and not a '92. I know that my 1980 does not have a headlight relay, and all current flows through the switch. I did have a switch failure in my car a few years ago, which is what prompted me to post on this issue. If you pulled the wires from the headlight switch and the instrument and side marker lights stayed on, then chances are good that you have a relay that is on it's way out. Please let us know what you find out when you have diagnosed the actual problem...
