Exhaust Paste 444-544

Greetings.
Anyone ever use Wurth exhaust assembly paste? Did it work and last against the heat?
Every old Volvo I've owned doesn't like to seal up properly where the manifold meets the exhaust pipe and it makes me sad.

    Hello,

    Leaks can be caused by using the wrong style of lead(pronounced leed, like leader) pipe on the B16 exhaust manifold.

    The correct style of lead pipe has a small amount of the pipe sticking through the end of the flange. The part of the tube protruding beyond the flange is supposed to go into the end of the exhaust manifold.

    Without the benefits of the extra sealing of the correct configuration, the gasket will fail prematurely.

    I have never seen an aftermarket lead pipe that was made correctly and I have ALWAYS had to buy them from Volvo.

      Surprisingly-This lead pipe does have a bit of extra sticking up past the flange. I didn't realize it was stock and I had thought someone had improved on the design a bit. I think it is my destiny to always have an exhaust leak. Hopefully I can sort this one out.

    I think exhaust temps would make short work of oily string.....
    Swapping in a new pipe onto distorted and rusty flanges isn't ideal. Everything needs to be clean and flat and the end of the pipe needs to fit properly against the manifold. Exhaust gaskets do seem to be a bit thin mow days so can't take up the slack very much. A light smear of any good exhaust paste should help but fitting new studs and using new nuts would give you the best chance of keeping a good seal. They don't have to be done up super tight, that tends to distort things but frequent checks on the nuts for the first few weeks is a good idea. If it starts to blow, check and tighten immediately or the gasket will burn and you'll have to start over.

    Have you got the steady bracket running from the bell housing to the exhaust pipe? Having the pipe clamped to this stops the pipe moving and also reduces the chance of the manifold cracking, a common B16 problem.

      I do not have a bracket from the bell housing to the pipe. I'll check the green book to see if there is a pic of that.
      It really could use some new studs on the manifold, but otherwise both surfaces looked as though they should have made a nice seal. I'll clean the surfaces again and try some paste with the gasket and keep checking it.
      After I finish the brakes.

        Hello,


        Back in the 1900's, plumbers used a mixture of lead (IV) oxide, oil, and cotton to seal the tapered threads of pipes.

        I've never used it, but I can imagine that if it works well for sealing threads, it may work well for sealing flanges.

          high temp silicone works great(orange).it can handle high temps but not high pressure so you need to file both surfaces flat.

            Check the mating surfaces to make sure they are flat. If the gasket surface of the manifold is eroded or otherwise damaged, have it milled flat.

            If you look inside the exhaust manifold you will see a machined seat for the lead pipe that Eric mentioned. (If the manifold is on the car, you can feel it your finger.) If you have the manifold milled flat, make sure that seat is re-cut to the proper depth.

            Start with a new down pipe from Volvo as Eric indicated and use new studs and nuts. Good luck and let us know when that thing gets quiet. ;-)
