Window Trim 120-130

I recently replaced the gaskets of the front and rear windows of my 122. I still have the trim to the rear window off and I am thinking about polishing it.

Does anyone know what it is made out of? It feels like Aluminum. Is it chromed or just polished? If it has chrome on it, I wont be able to sand out some of the scratches.

As said it's aluminum but it's been clear anodised. Anodising gives a hard finish that's more durable than you might think but if you attack it with anything abrasive you'll go right through to the base metal. That will corrode quickly unless you're willing to maintain it by polishing and waxing frequently Not ideal on a daily driver. New trim is avalable but the price is quite high. Better replacement parts might be findable. You don't say if your trim is particularly bad but with a bit of patience a good paint restorer type polish might give results that you're happy with. Wax well before putting it back on.

It is polished aluminum but also anodized so it will probably look better as is than after polishing.

I believe it is aluminum that has been treated/coated at the factory with some type of anodizing. After you get it all polished out the way you want, you might try a product called "Zoopseal" (no kidding). I've had this on some of my trim for 3 years now, and it hasn't tarnished at all. I believe it is available through Eastwood, amongst others.

Curt-

There was a thread a couple of years ago. I saved the link as it was handy about cleaning up all kinds of stuff on a 122. See: http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=1152230&show_all=1

Good to see you at the IPD sale.

Chris
