Wagon Stalling 200 1985

My wife just called me and said the 1985 240 Wagon just stalled twice on her. Once when she was going around a corner and again when she was taking off at a light. The fuel level is a little low so I told her to fill up. Does this sound like the in-tank pump?

MY 83 245'S IN TANK PUMP IS TOAST,A ND I 'RUN OUT' OF GAS AT ABOUT 1/3-1/2 TANK, AS PER THE GAUGE.....

I HAVE THE IN-TANK REPLACEMENT, JUST HAVEN'T GOTAROUNDTOIT YET, SO I DRIVE ONLY A SHORT DISTANCE AND ALWAYS STOP TO REFUEL BEFORE I GO HOME......

YOUR CAR DOESN'T HAVE TO BE >REAL< LOW IN ORDER TO 'RUN OUT' IF THE IN TANK PUMP IS SHOT.........

I once tried to remove the IAC Valve and could not get the thing out. It seemed fairly simple(remove bolts, remove elec connector), however it would not budge. I stopped for fear of damaging it.

Can this thing be cleaned in place?

I would do a tune-up and replace the usual suspects: spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, air filter, spark plug wires. And, if I remember right, the 200 fuel filter is more accessible than later models, so replace that too. Go to www.stepbystepvolvo.com and take the "Real-Life Volvo Quiz." My 740 had hiccups for like 18 months before I finally figured it out.

I would eliminate other suspect areas before opening the fuel tank. That said can you hear the in tank pump running at the filler neck? If the problem goes away on a full tank and comes back at about a half tank it is the in tank pump or rubber hose.

Do you have a good clean and adjusted throttle body and Idled air control valve.

Wasn't that low on fuel, not in "red zone" yet. I'm guessing just low enough though that it may be causing problems with the possibly deteriated hose on the internal pump.

I had similar problems last year with my 242. Hiccupping when below 3/4 of a tank, and occasional stalling. The rubber hose between the fuel pick up and the in-tank pump was severely deteriorated because one of the previous owners had replaced it before with the wrong type of fuel line. They used ordinary fuel hose for carbureted applications inside the tank. That's a no-no. Carburetor fuel line is only fuel proof on the inside. The outside deteriorates quickly when submerged in gasoline. Make sure that you get the proper type of fuel line for in-tank use. IPD sells this, plus the replacement rubber O-ring for the fuel tank sender unit/fuel pump assembly. Don't try re-using the old O-ring, it's probably quite deteriorated too.

I replaced a fuel pump once in my 1983, however I seem to remember that one of the hoses is sort of "shrink fit" over the pump connection.

How do you guys handle reattaching this hose after you cut it off?
