ABS Alight 200

the patient is a 92 wagon. after a "stupid" unsafe in a hurry jumpstart my ABS light is now lit up in neon.

i know i know....stupid is as stupid does

would i be reasonable to presume the surge protecting fuse attached to the abs module under the passenger seat is the proximate place to look for trouble?

with that said..........is this fool smarter (easier).......to unbolt the seat from the rail or the rail from the car body for easier removal?

That is very likely to be the problem.

Easier to take the tracks off the car than take the seat off the tracks.

Hopefully that's where the surge protector is, that's where it is on my '93 but it seems like Volvo moved things around a lont the last few years (hard time finding room for all the electronic gizmos.

If that doesn't fix it, get a bentley manual, they have a very nice and thorough diagnostic procedure to go through that just takes a multimeter and an hour or two.

      thanks john.

unfortunately the 10amp fuse under the right front seat is good.

i have the bentley. i will wait for a sunny non rainy day to begin.

it happened right after a jumpstart so i presume a voltage spike has done something? and likely candidates if the fuse is good?

otherwise the car idles and drives as before.

No clue what the problem might be if it isn't that.

I've managed to diagnose and repair two ABS systems before. Once on my old '95 Jetta, without a diagnostic manual (on that car the Bentley manual said to jsut take it to the dealer) I used the wiring diagram and measured the resistance across all the sensors at the ABS control unit. And found one way off from the others, replaced it and it was fine. And on my '93 I went through the whole Bentley diagnostic just to be sure, and it only showed two faults - the fuse and a missing ABS warning bulb (heh, funny one, guy I bought it from).

          thanks john 200

i figured it out today. on the oft chance it might be the surge relay rather than the fuse on the relay i swapped the entire surge relay with one off my 93 wagon.

after the swap i started the car and abs went on and went off.

to verify i placed the suspect relay in the 93 and started it up. the abs went on and did not go off.

the fuse on this relay is undamaged.

does anyone know if this relay can be re-soldered?
