240 Tail light woes 200 1993

'93 240 sedan - the last run for the model year, you'd think thaqt they would have gotten the kinks out of those tail lignts.

Passenger side tail light - outer bulb was burning brighter (and hotter) than driver side and inner running light (5 watt) not lit at all. Heat build up melted tail light assembly, so I ordered new one - complete with printed circuit board, sockets and bulbs.- Same problem.
All other lights work - Brake and turn signal, but back up lights are also dead. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot and repair?

240 Tail light woes 200 1993

I am having trouble with drivers side brake light. I really don't want to buy a whole new light assembly due to the frequent failure rate. Furthermore, why would anyone run lights off of a thin circuit board anyway? Has anyone ever just hard wired all of the lights? You know, like they used to connect light in the old days...when they worked unless the bulb as blown or the battery was dead.

Loose Moose

A few people have Hardwired direct to the tabs on the sockets. Bypassing the Circuit board all together

Tony, further inspection revealed that the printed circuit was bad - a bit melted at the connector tab, so I installed new PC. Backups worked, but RT tail still out. Swapped socket with a spare, and ALL IS WELL and working. Thanks for your tips.

PS: Dashboard Idiot light is still on - I can live with that, but any suggestions? Thanks, Greg

If I press on the brake pedal, idiot light blinks off briefly,. With parking lights only, it is out. Headlights are OK, could it be connectors for headlamps?

If you step on the brake pedal, does the idiot light go out?

Does the light stay on with either the Running lights or Headlights on?

Moose, Did you try replacing the socket ? I have found the sockets to appear to have good contacts, only to find out that due to the soft plastic the scoket is made of , it is possible to overtighten the bulb in the brake light socket and result in a failure. Even if it were the circuit board, which I understand is rare, You can pick one up for $35-40 bucks on line- seems a little less drastic than hard wiring .

Just another thought... Did you buy the vehicle with this issue??

It is possible ( easy actually) that for some reason the Previous owner pulled the wire out of it's position in the connector and swapped it with another one.
If someone accidently swapped the wires for Pins 3 and 4 in the whiote connector, on the passenger side, then the brighter 'Brake light' filement would be lit when you turn on the headlights.

Just shooting into the dark here.

it may sound dumb but are you sure you didn't force the 1157 bulb in the socket 180 degrees off? Although the tits on the bulb are offset, you can force it in the socket incorrectly causing the brighter, Brake filiment to light when you turn on your Headlights.

Backup lights: The Black wires on the Harness at teh tail lights are for the Backup lights.. do you have voltage there when you are in reverse??

Tony, I rotated the hot burning bulb, and that appears to have solved the passenger side outer brake light problem - very strange, I have had 3 240's and never gave a thought to how the bulb fit into the socket, since it fits either way. The drivers side connector can be moved in a certain way to make contact on the printed circuit board and the back up lights will now work, but it looks like the connector will need to be replaced - there is some heat damage on that connector. The 5W passenger running light is still out, do you know if that one is linked to the left side as the back up lights are? Any suggestions on replacing that connector? Thanks

The backup lights are not in the Bulb Failure sensor circuit so they are just daisy chained from the Drivers side to the passenger side (black wire).
You can lift the the Top up on that white connector and lift the wires up and out of the connector. Maybe just a light sanding of the contacts on the black wires will do the trick for the Back up lights.

5W running light, closest to the license plate. have you tried backing off a little bit on the Socket. Sometimes the Circuit board gets beat up in the 'fully seated' position. With a meter, are you getting voltage to the metal tabs of the Socket? when it's in place and the lights are on?

Tony,
Thanks for the advice. the bulvb socket is keyed, so it only goes in one way, plus I installed a brand new tail light assembly, pc board, sockets complete with housing and the same problem occurs. I will trace the b/u wires this weekend. Thanks

Yes, the Socket is Keyed so it goes into the teh Tail light assembly only one way. The Socket itself is Keyed to accept the bulb only one way BUT you can put the bulb in the socket incorrectly.
I sent you a wiring color code via e-mail.. maybe that will help.

Good luck
