945 heater matrix - leaking? 900 1991

Hi Guys,
any advice on the following subject most welcome: I have antifrezze in the drivers side footwell so I guess I have a coolant leak somewhere in the heating circuit? I will have to remove the carpets to get them cleaned and dry (antifreeze may have taken the paint off the metal I guess), and I think I will have to get the heater matrix out and check it - and the hoses.
My manual (Haynes) is very sketchy about carpet removal/heater matrix removal, so any advice about this or about my diagnosis most welcome,
Thanks in anticipation,

Owen

    Hi Owen,

You do not state whether your car is with A/C or not.

Without A/C it is fairly simple to remove the heater matrix. You should be able to gain access by removing the panel under the steering wheel, and then the matrix is situated in the center console, close to the firewall.

If your car has A/C you could have a look at this page: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=43621
It might give you a hint on what to do.

Hope you can use the info,
    Bjarne

Owen, the FAQ's have the whole procedure. It can be done by anyone (I did it) in a weekend. Basically you take the whole center console of the car apart beginning in the back seat and working forward to the top of the dash. Gets a little hairy backing out the small (7mm I think) bolts way in there that hold the two halves of the air box together. I used a 1/4 in drive socket ground flat and a long wobble extension. Someone with small hands may be handy also. (I used a 10 year old). Read the directions carefully, I spent a lot of time removing a vertical bolt that had nothing to do with the core at all.

Note that whatever has affected the heater core has also weakened the radiator. I had to replace mine the summer after replacing the heater core.

    Good luck.

Many thanks Brian - very helpful - I had looked in the FAQs but didn't find anything but I'll now look again! I should be OK with the small fiddly bits - I'm used to working on old British cars.
      Thanks again,

      Owen

Brian - I've had a look in the 700/900 FAQs but couldn't find anything very specific regarding the heater matrix removal - could you let me know where I can find the information you referred to please?
        thanks again,

        Owen from Scotland

          It's in there: http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/HeaterCoreReplacement.htm

If you can work on old British cars this should be easy. Volvos have more room to work than my wife's 1986 Jaguar for example.

Thanks yet again Brian, for some reason the version of the FAQ which I had been routed to previously was a much older version which didn't have this item (I guess this is one of the perils of relying on an old bookmark?). Anyway, that's really helpful and I'll get reading right away. I'm an MG and TR man myself (as well as Volvos of course), but I have to admit that although these old British cars have a lot of charm, they really do seem dated even compared to a '91 Volvo!
            all the best,

            Owen
