90 245 no start- no fault codes??? 200

Hello all, my 90 245 was starting to run rough (like starving for fuel/ or missing) when last weekend I went to start it to let a friend hear what it was doing, and of course it wouldnt start at all. went to check fault codes, and got nothing- not even a 1-1-1! plug is in proper hole (#6 according to bentley) and I hold it for a 2-count, the light comes on while I hold the button down, but I get no flashes after that. I'm leaning more towards ignition b/c I smelled gas on each spark plug when I checked them. Any ideas? is my ecu done??

Thanks in advance
John

Hi,

There are two things that you should check!

1. Crankshaft Position Sensor

2. Ignition Amplifier Module

These are common faults for the ignition system. Make sure you are chasing the correct swine. Install a sparkplug into each wire and ground the threads. Have an assistant turn the key or wire a remote start switch. Visually acquire the spark.

1. The crankshaft position sensor is located underneath and behind the cylinderhead on the bellhousing. The wire frays and the varmint heads for the gate.

2, The ignition amplifier module is a solid state device that grounds the ignition coil. This produces the high-tension required for firing the cylinder.

There are other possibilities, such as a rich mixture or valve timing failure which you should promptly discount.

Thanks for the tips. I forgot about that dang CPS- no mention of it in bentley's. I'm still a bit nervous that I'm not getting any codes from the fault code indicator, but I'll see if this gets her going.

John
