Fuel Pressure Regulator. 200

I have an opportunity to get a spare FPR. It is for a 1985 normally aspirated car with the LH 2.2 system. The seller tells me that it is a 2.5 unit. Is this what I need?

    You want a Bosch 0280160293.

I don't know if that's the part number that I need or not. It's for a 1985 Normally aspirated engine. My fuel pump has been whining for a little while, and now it's starting to warble (I can't think of a better term). It sounds as if it's about ready to say goodbye. I can hear a slight whine from the in tank pump if I pull the fuel cap with the engine running. The Main pump is noisy enough to hear inside and outside of the car. I thought that perhaps it was the regulator causing the problem. I pulled the vacuum hose from the regulator, but cannot smell any gas fumes. Ideas?

After talking with Pageda, I am convinced that I am going to need to change the main pump. Thankfully I have one that was taken from a very low (less than 20000 mile) car. It runs with power attached, so I don't need to ask how I'll be spending my Saturday morning. The car still made the whine with a full tank, and I can hear the in tank pump running so..................

Yup. Hopefully it's new and Bosch branded. My philosophy is that a new "spare" regulator belongs on the car, and the old regulator can live on the shelf. :-)

In almost 20 years of several family and friends LH 2.2 and 2.4 cars I've never experienced an FPR problem. YMMV as they say.

When they do fail, it absolutely s-u-x.... only a couple days after an oil change, too.... all for naught as the sump got filled with fuel. That's when I decided that my spares weren't doing me any good on the shelf just waiting for the old ones to fail.

My reasoning for simply replacing original ones preventatively in 2009 is that they started failing for folks at least five years ago.... many more since. So we're well into the failure bracket.

Me too. I have my new one on the shelf. But that makes sense for me, with as many cars as I have - which one would I install it in? Ahh, the broken one, of course.

Actually, I've had LH regulator failures, but both were LH2.0, not 2.2 or 2.4.

I look for shiny new ones at the bone yard and replace an old but still working one on the car. I figure it saves me trouble down the road and makes the car more reliable and safe. Dan

Yes, 2.5 BAR = 36.5 psi. See Bentley page 241-9.
