need help both altenator belts shredded 200 1987

need some help for my 87 245 wagon. on my way to work this morning. I heard a screeching sound, then shortly after my battery light and parking brake light and brake light came on. after pulling over and popping the hood seen both alternator belts shredded. the engine temp was getting hot. so i pretty much had to drive a mile at a time stop, cool down. and so on and so on. My question is what would cause both belts to go? i turned the fan and it seems to move fairly freely, although it did have a faint squeel to it, kinda like a squeeky door hinge in a home. so i don't think the water pump is bad, but then again maybe it shouldn't be making any noise at all. The bushing mount for the altenator has some wear but it didnt seem to bad. prior to all of this happening my temp gauge was always on the low side, so i dont know if that was an indicator that the waterpump was going or maybe it was the thermostat. anyway the brake lights lighting up caught my off guard as well. does anybody have any suggestions? should i plan on replacing the waterpump, thermostat, and belts and go from there? or maybe just the thermostat and belts? any input appreciated.

Chris mentioned it but I'll hit on it again. Grab the Fan.. down close to the pulley and see if there is side to side movement. If there eis then there is a chance that this bad waterpump was causing wobbling on that pulley. Fan belts don't like that

It should be pretty straightforward to figure out. There are three contact points for the belt.

    1) Water pump
    2) Alternator
    3) Harmonic balancer (crankshaft pulley)

There should be no noise from the water pump or fan assembly. If the alternator spins freely and there isn't any obvious problem with the harmonic balancer, I'm guessing that the issue is the water pump. They don't fail too often, but the pumps can fail, particularly in the presence of overtightened belts. Belts are typically overtightened to overcome squealing or noise, which is usually caused by out-of-alignment accessories due to bushing wear. The usual failure mode is excessive play in the bearing, which can be felt by attempting to move the pulley for the water pump side to side. If it squeals when you turn it without the belts on, there could be a bearing issue that causes it to seize when there is a sideways load from the belts.

All the lights lit up because the alternator isn't charging.

The thermostat may or may not be bad. If you're opening the cooling system to replace the water pump, definitely do the thermostat at the same time.

Had the same thing happen to my 86 one morning on the way to work. The noise, the lights on the dash, the smell of burning rubber, all of it.

Water Pump bearing had been squealing at start up and I blamed the fact I did not know how to tighten the fan belts correctly (do now).

The water pump bearing froze up, tossed both belts, and it was time for the tow home. Try and turn the water pump by hand, if it is hard to move or locked up that is a good place to start. Like already said, check the center pulley because it can deform and wobble. Easy way to check is to pull the coil wire off and have someone turn the engine over while you watch the pulley. There should be no side to side movement should run straight and true.

Get set of belts from the same production run or a matched set.

One more tip, I always have an extra water pump seal kit around, just in case something gets pinched. They are cheap to buy, and if something does go wrong, you have a backup plan already on hand.

        Good Luck,

        Paul

went to work on it today. since i had to leave it in a parking lot i decided to basically get some belts on it and drive it home. I did check for play on the water pump shaft.there was none immediately apparent. I grabbed the hub behind the fan and pulled in all directions. if there was any play i couldnt notice it. still had a very faint squeek when i would free spin it. when I tightened down the alternator i noticed worn bushing on altenator mount. It seems that the altenator was a little crooked because of this. after putting on both belts i noticed the one closest to firewal fit better while the one closest to the radator had some play maybe about an inch or so. driving back home the temp gauge seemed to be reading at 8 o'clock then would go back to the botom position about 20 minutes into the drive. i picked up a thermostat. and i already have bushings so i hope this will solve the issues.
