Seatbelt locking prematurely frustrating evening 200 1989

Without any previous warning I reach for my seatbelt and pull to engage it and it locks up. wiggle giggle it and tug and finally after much grinding i can get it atteached. I knew I saw a pictorial of a HOW for this. The grinding feels like it is trying to lock so I assume it's the spring that holds the engagement back. Get home from Work, and have at it. Slide the seat all the way forward, pull the 'U' trim away from the door, pull up the saddles and get the trim out of the way. Two of the four bolts are tough to get at with the rug peeled back but I get off the metal bracket that the belt retracter is bolted to. Finally get the retractor in my hand to do what I hope is an easy operation of putting this spring back in place. Go to remove the plastic cover and "What's this?!?!" a new kind of screw head. I guess the world didn't have enough variety with Slotted or phillips head or Allen or Torx they have to come up with what I find to be TRI-WING. Needless to say I am driving Beltless until I can get my hands on this mystery screwdriver. The local Hardware stores as well as Homedepot (Useless store) have never heard of it. I shot past my friends Auto repair shop in desperation to get this job done and he never heard of it either. What started out to be a " Hold dinner for a half hour honey" kind of a job had me driving all over the place in frustration and coming up empty, I passed on dinner and my wife was throwing water on me and watching it turn to steam. I guess for some dopey reason the power that be thought this section of the seatbelt needed to be Tamper Proof. I guess it's better that I drive with a broken belt.. I don't know.

TonyH, I don't know if they are the same size, but Saabs used a raised tri-slot type screw for the cover plate over the ignition switch/shift lock on the old 900 series. I have that socket and you're welcome to use it if it fits. The socket is about a 1/2 inch in diameter with three cutout slots at the business end. I'm in Bay Shore--half a minute from Sunrise Hwy. -- Dave

Dave, Thanks so much for your offer. I went to Ace and they sell a 'Tamper Proof kit' It's basically a bunch of Bits to fit in a magenetic handle. It's got some weird shaped stuff in it, and in it ...sure enough is this dopey thing. The bit is too wide to fit all the way down into the plastic housing but i can grind it down a little to get it to go. We will find out tonight.
Thanks again for your offer. Hey, you ever in the Pathmark over there? My wife works there.

Oh, and I thought to mention someone closer to you who'd probably have that socket rattling around his tool box is Charlie at CPL on 25A in Mt Sinai--he used to do a lot of Saabs. If you go that route tell him Dave From Gert's
Garage sent you.

Hi Tony,

Dang, I know just the security screw you're talking about. I've gotten past them using ordinary tools in a desperate manner, but did not know Volvo adopted these for the seat belt retractors. I'd probably slot them with a Dremel and discard them on reassembly, favoring ordinary fasteners. When our 89 gets back I'll have a look for myself. In the mean time, is this the pictorial you were looking for?

You spend the first two years of their life teaching them to walk and talk. Then you spend the next sixteen telling them to sit down and shut up.

15 minutes after I got the plastic cover off tonight, it was fixed.

Totally different setup then the year Belt you have shown. All I needed was to steel a spring out of a Pen. Stupid tri wing screws.

When the 89 came home, I looked at getting access to the retractors and decided to wait for a visit to the pick'n'pull. The trim looks like it would crack if I looked at it sideways too long.

Thanks for letting me know they changed, and to expect heavy security. I guess I've been lucky not to find out for myself.

Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

I took a few Pics of what is going with this style Belt. Like your '83 belt, the larger Plastic Cover is the one that comes off.

The Trim is what started my anger while the Tri Wing tossed me off the edge.

I keep my car very stock and very clean, and while Lifting the saddles and pulling that 'U' channel was no sweat, I just 'looked' at the Plastic up the Pillar and it cracked right where the seat belt bolts to the upper part of the Pillar. Cracked right apart. In a way it saved me from taking that out. I did the work while on my knees with the back door open, the Drivers seat stayed in. I anticipated a small piece of double sided tape to keep it up there and tight but honestly I set it up there and between the Belt covering the small exposed piece and the 'U' channel... you can't see it and it doesn't rattle at all.

Art, that's the pictorial I have. As I read the BB and find interesting stuff, I put them in my Favorites. I saw your Seatbelt writeup a long time ago and saved it. That's how I knew what was going on internally when I couldn't get my belt to lock . I was picturing how it works from your pictures.
Teh belt is a newer version of the one you have there but I'm sure it operates the same. The screws are recessed down into the plastic cover so my creativity was very limited. I will replace with something much more common when I get this sucker open.
