Part ID Help and Function 200 1983

I noticed a part that appears to be part of the fuel rail at the front of engine. It seemed odd as there is what appears to be some type of nipple with no hose connected to it. After poking around I found a loose hose that had been capped off at the end with a washer and screw.

Can someone help me understand what the part is and what it does? Also, what are the consequences of it not being connected to anything (if it is even supposed to be).

As usual I learn a ton from this site and greatly appreciate the informed input I receive!

I think I have attached a picture below...if it does not come through I will have another go at it.

Thanks!
Chris

That sounds like the Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR).

With the vacuum line disconnected and capped, the FPR will always feel atmospheric pressure (as in wide open throttle) and will raise the pressure about 6psi above what's needed for normal driving.

Thanks for thequick reply! I amgoing to do some more research on this.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I am trying to figure out why this would have been done. Could it be a band-aid to hide another issue?

Thanks!
Chris

Probably a bad thing per Bruce's reply. Reconnect it and see what happens. it's ordinary vacuum hose - cheap and readily available - if you need to replace.

It could be that the car had vacuum leaks and the owner was trying to conserve all he could. Odd logic but not beyond the realm of possibility.

Or the FPR could be bad but i think they leak from the fuel side when they go.

Off hand I'd say it's not a good thing. My guess it might be somebody's trick attempt at more power. It could make the mixture richer than it needs to be, and also means the extra pressure for acceleration would not be there when you want it for passing, etc.

Maybe a band-aid as you say, like misguided attempt at a fix of some kind. I'd say make sure that hose is still good (usually enough slack to cut a bit off), then reconnect it to the FPR and go from there.

Perfect! Thanks for the insight. I will try reconnecting the hose and see what results.

Many thanks!
Chris
