Just bought a volvo 240DL 1987 but now can't get it to start 200 1987

Just bought a volvo 240DL 1987 but now can't get it to start...Drove the car home a couple of miles, started it everyday in the drive way (no drive because not inspected or registered yet)Went away Thursday came back Sunday and now can not get it to run. Changed fuses, battery good and charged, topped off the gas, checked connections. Tried push starting it and popping it off in reverse, would run for a few seconds and then quickly die. (Heavy car!) Almost seems like it's not getting any gas? Don't know anything about cars :( Any suggestions on where to start? Advise greatly appreciated!

Disconnect the electrical connector to the Air Mass Meter with the key off. Does it run at idle? Dan

The AMM is located between the throttle body and the air box (air filter), it is a round plastic cylinder about 3 " in diameter. It is mounted to the drivers side fender and has an electrical connector attached to the top of it. Disconnect the connector with the ignition off, then try to start the engine. If it idles fine you need to replace the AMM. Dan

I fount the amm and disconnected it but the problem is the car wont even turn over. Its very close to starting but wont. The fuel pump is working, there's good gas in the car, new fuses, we've done everything in the instruction manual with the book for the car. I have no clue whats wrong with it.

You need a good fully charged battery for the engine to run, you may have drained the battery by starting it frequently but not running it long enough to keep it charged.
If the engine is turning over slowly you probably need to charge the battery and make sure the connections to the battery are clean and tight. Dan

Fuel pump relay? Under dash, behind glove box.

First, tell if your (electric) fuel pump is working. Turn key to 'on', but without engaging the starter. Place your ear near the pump (near driver side rear wheel). You should hear the pump working...hum or clicking sound.

Very common problem with those symptoms you describe.

Car has been sitting..so possibly bad gas?

The fuel pump seems to be working. where would I go from there? We found the fuel pump relay but I'm not sure what IT looks like or what it does. Why would it be an issue to the car not running? Its not a gas problem I made sure the car had been started frequently.

Common failure is the fuel pump relay. also the 25 amp spade fuse by the battery. Both designed to stop the flow of fuel for safety reasons.Check and make sure all the connections are clean and tight on the battery also
