Muffler Fix - Just replace rear muffler or do it all

The rear muffler connection to the axle pipe has broken off. However, the resonator, its connections to the cat pipe and the axle pipe, and the tail pipe connection to the rear muffler are all still ok. By that I mean there are no holes, though there is surface rust around each of these connections.

So I can either:

1. remove the tail pipe and the remainder of the rear muffler sleeve on the axle pipe, and then just replace the rear muffler, or

2. do everything from the cat back

Anyone ever done just a partial fix like this? If so, was it worth it?

Or is it standard to just do from the cat back when part of the system goes? And why?

    I have done both ways, it's nice to save some money, but with less time overall these days, some times it's best to do the whole thing.
    You MUST get a pipe expander though, really, really difficult other wise. available at Advance AUto here.

    Muffler Fix - Just replace rear muffler or do it all

    The cat back parts are sold as a kit complete with all the hangers, mounts, and clamps. There is noting wrong with replacing just the rear muffler and tail pipe, but if in a year or two you have to do the front part it will cost you more because you are buying the parts separately instead of in a kit.

    I don't see that you mentioned what kind of car you have, but roughly speaking for a 940, the kit is about $150 and getting the same parts separately is around $200 - $225. The other advantage of doing the kit is that it may save labor in the long run.

      Yes, I already purchased the complete kit, but then got thinking about it - did it make sense to just use part of the kit for now, and hold onto the other parts for when the rest goes.

      Thus my question on whether others have done a partial fix and if it was worth it.
      I basically hate taking off good parts just because one part went bad.

      Anyone out there done a partial fix as per my original questions?

        Muffler Fix - BUT a small problem

        The job is done; full exhaust kit from the cat back. But I hear an ever so slight flutter from the tail pipe; not like a bad muffler though.

        I decided to look under the rest of the car and noticed something dripping down from the connection from the cat pipe into the new resonator. At first I thought it was possibly the anti-sieze I put on the pipe connection, but when I felt it, it was just condensation.

        I used a tie-wrap as a come-along when hooking up the resonator's second rubber hanger. When I cut off the tie-wrap, the resonator centered itself between the 2 hangers.

        But I may have tightened up this one clamp before I cut off the tie-wrap. Could this be the problem with the condensation leak, and thus the very slight flutter from the tail pipe?

        If so, what do I do? Would loosening and re-tightening this one clamp resolve it? Or?

          Resolving new muffler leak - still a problem

          It looks like a camp tightening issue. I loosened the clamp connecting the cat pipe to the resonator, moved it back slightly and re-tightened the clamp. The leak stopped.

          But the leak reappeared at one of the other clamps. So I loosened each up as it leaked, moved it back slightly and re-tightened.

          Feels like a game of wack-a-mole.

          The original leak has now been resolved. The one that seems to leak the most still is the clamp at the rear of the resonator.

          So how tight is tight? Is there a danger of over tightening these clamps? Is the clamp location (approximately 1/2" from the end of the female end) too far back?

          Is some small leak from one of these connections okay? That is, will it just go away by itself as some rust builds up at that point??

          I'm learning :)

        I have played this game a lot.

        Lemme just buy the tail pipe and rear muffler. 3 months after I get it up, the front one craps out. I do it all now: Cat back.
        I torch off the from muffler from the Cat pipe and with the Hangers off it all drops down in minutes. All that new stuff slides together nice and hangs easy.

        What I do also is I weld the necks on the mufflers much better then there 4 or 5 spot welds.The neck is the area that usually lets go and causes the muffler to spin and leak. It's nice to have a welder. The few minutes I spend to do this definitely adds life to the exhaust. A LISLE Pipe expander also makes this job much more painless
