This is Too Much! ---- No Start In BX 200 1978

Had the 78 245 on a lift and was checking for power at the fuel pump. Either I have a poor ground or no power at pump. Tried checking with a light by turning key to ignition and by cranking. Nothing. Can there be a reason power doesn't get to the pump besides relay? relay under dash on driver side is good. fuses are good. Is there another fuse under the hood to check? What about under the dash on passenger side?

This is Too Much! ---- No Start In BX (EDIT UPDATE 8:30 am EST) 200 1978

EDIT correction thanks to Art's posting the '78 diagram below.
I was going by my hand-drawn cheat sheet based on '79 and later.

    "fuses are good."

Is that based on using your test light, like you did at the pump?

If not, use the test light at fuses 7 and 5 (voltage in on Left contact, out on Right).

Fuse 7 should always have 12V coming in from battery +. Output goes to Fuel relay 30 to be "relayed" out from 87 to the pumps when relay is energized.

Fuse 5 [NOT 13 in '78] should pass "Key On" 12V to Fuel relay 15 to "help" energize the coil.
Energizing Fuel relay coil also requires coil pulses at 31b, as SdW said.

    • I've seen a '78 get towed because the relay coil fuse "looked OK" but could not pass enough current to "pick" the Fuel relay.

    Howdy catfish,

Check the wire that runs from the minus side (terminal 1) of the coil to terminal 31b of the fuel pump relay. That is the wire that carries the ignition pulse sensing to keep the relay energized. It is shown as white/red on my schematic.
