88 740 wagon 330k : Distributor question 700

Hello,

I jsut installed a new cap and rotor. The old ones were in poor shape. During the reinstall, on the bottom of the distributor I could feel and see a plastic block with wires that seemed to go directly into the distributor body, and they were more or less just flopping around. On a short leash, but still, oily--and it seemed wrong.

Do you know what this is and how it should be secured?

Thanks.

Hall sensor connector. Cost about $2.

Thanks, I do post back- if you search my posts you will see. I read the FAQ and what I seem to understand is that the plastic block with the wires is not the hall sensor itself, but the connecttions to the hall sensor that is in the distributor. I am wondering still if the wire block should be flopping around out there.

Nope. It generally means the plastic block is broken. Easy replacement, but you have to pull the distributor.

If its bouncing around, the wires get chaffed. Then short out against the distributor body and car quits running.
