Why do my spark plugs keep fouling? 120-130 1967

Not familiar with early Volvos but just throwing out something from my youth.

Does the '67 volvo's need a Ballast resistor?? Not sure if this car is new to you or if this Plug issue just crept up. I swapped in a V8 in a car that had a 6 cylinder ('67 Firebird) and I wired up the coil without the resistor. I was eating plugs and Points. Maybe you have the same issue.

    coincidence... both are '67 cars.

If all four are black it's fuel mixture. Rarely if ever do engines oil foul all four plugs. Adjust the carbs leaner, and be sure that the jets are returning to the uppermost position when the choke control is pushed in. Simple.

an over-rich carb mixture setting will coat them in soot quickly. You should be able to clean them off and reuse them.

If they are oily it is a bad sign.

if they are wet with gasoline you are not getting sufficient spark or your timing is off.

A pic would help the diagnosis.

    Burned out or fouled?
    What color is the insulator?
    Oily or not?

Can you explain what you mean by the spark plugs are "burned out"?
    Maybe even post a picture?

i will post a picture tomorrow.
But they're all black (fouled) and the car is hardly getting a spark from them.
This is the second time this is happening.

        Jake,

Black and dry, or black and gooey wet? If black and dry, it's too much fuel. If black and gooey wet, it's oil.

After you check all of your ignition system and adjust the valves, see if you still have the problem.

Then, if it's black and dry, check the carb function.

If it's black and gooey, you are getting oil in the combustion chambers, which does not belong there. If it is just valve seals, you could replace them without pulling the head. If it is the rings, then a proper repair would be rings or an engine rebuild.

However, if is it oil (black and gooey) and you don’t want to pull the engine apart, you could install non-fouling adapters into the spark plug holes, and install your plugs into the non-fouling adapters.

Non-fouling adapters used to sit on a display card behind the counter of every car parts store, but you don't see them much anymore. Ask at an auto parts store to see if they still have them. If they look at you like you are from another planet, fear not. You are just from a different time on this planet. I bet JC Whitney still has them if the auto parts stores do not.

When you look at the adapters, you will think it has to be a joke because they are so simple. Do not be fooled. I put them in a worn out Jeep and in a worn out Toyota years ago, and they are no joke. They work perfectly. They used to be about 49 cents each. Maybe today they could be up to $2.00 each.

I assume you are using the right plugs?

        Charley

          Pictures.. 120-130 1967

All of the plugs looked like this so I just took pictures of one.
It has a tiny bit of oil on it. But its covered in carbon.
I started the car and it fired right up today? Strange.
Anyways, what do you guys think?

            Jake,

Make sure your ignition system is in good order. In any trouble shooting situation move one step at a time. Since trouble shooting this issue may cost money I'd start with what's free (if you or someone you know has a timing light), check your ignition timing, see manual and other posts. If it's been a while since your last tune up, order a kit (from IPD about $75, if memory serves me). Check and/or replace your ignition points, cap, rotor, wires, and condenser.

What carburetor do you have on your car, SU's or Weber? As mentioned earlier, the most common reason SU's run rich is sticking choke. If SU's I'd remove, disassemble, and clean the carbs. See other posts, web sites, and maintenance manual for details on this.

            Hope this helps,
            Colin
