sliding! 200 1991

Good Morning! was in the 1991 244 brick yesterday entering a highway here in sunny Florida in the light rain going about 45-50 around a 2 lane curve and the brick started to slide! I let up off the gas and steered as I was spinning completely around facing oncoming traffic! first time for this! downright exciting! tires are not bald! still have pretty good tread!

Drive safely!

I did that on a wet road in a 242 I once had... I knew then and I know now that I was going way too fast in an unnecessarily low gear with my foot to the floor... I bet you were going just a a tad fast too ;-)

Good you didn't do any damage!

The fastest way around a corner is to slide the back end out a bit. Enjoy the rush! You won't experience it in a brick very often.

Regards,

I 180ed in the snow once, it seemed the tires on one side just wouldn't stay on the road. Turned out they were directional tires installed backwards on that side (a new-to-me used car).

I agree w/ stickbuilder. I had a similar thing happen w/ a friend's new truck: 1st rain in weeks, sharp curve, excessive speed, water on oil.

Still, I'd check tire pressures (the truck above had tires inflated to the max) and try some curves at speed to check handling. Loose sway bar? That kind of thing.

IME RWD cars warn you before sliding; vs, say, my old 911 Porsche where it seemed there was .1 MPH difference between making it through a curve and losing control.

The only problem is that we have not had any rain here is Sunny Florida for several weeks. The roads were coated in oils and other petroleum products (asphalt does secrete oils as well), and you got into an oily spot in the curve. Also diesel is often spilled as trucks negotiate curves (especially if they were just filled with fuel). You probably don't have a problem, nor does your brick. Chances are, since the rain has been with us for a couple of days now, you could go back through that same curve at the same speed, with no problem.
