Timing Belt change - rope trick 200 1987

I just want to thank everyone for your support while changing the timing belt on my 240 for the first time, in particular for the "rope trick" suggestion, as you know I wasn't sure at first but with the help of your testimonials I went for it. When I tried it, it was the funniest thing I've seen happen while working on a car!

Thanks!

An "alternate' twist to the rope trick 200 1987

Glad to hear the rope trick worked! It has for me a few times as well. There is a "derivative" of this procedure for a different problem that works well too. In particular, it makes repairing a stripped spark plug hole via helicoil possible while the head is still on the engine.

Take yarn "thin rope" and coat it with bearing grease, then feed it into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. Once "stuffed", drill out the plug hole, re-thread it, and install the helicoil. Now pull the grease coated yarn out of the cylinder along with almost all of the shavings. NOTE: I said "ALMOST" all shavings but fortunately the rings, cylinder sleeves, valves, and seats are made of harder metals.
